VIEW PHOTO GALLERY In our modern day hustle and bustle, the kitchen may be the one room in the house (or tiny box) that we spend less and less time in. It’s a place to hold left overs, reheat day-old coffee, and maybe store some chips (or at least veggie chips for those of us who lie to ourselves that we’re being healthy with our snack choices), while we rush off to do everything but sit home and cook. Ikea hopes to bring people back into the kitchen and inspire them to cook, create and rediscover their love of food. Their concept for the kitchen of 2025 centers around a single table that revolutionizes cooking as we know it. This is called The Table For Living. It almost seems to come alive when you place a piece of food on it. No, it wont slice and dice and cook the food for you, but by using a camera above the table, it will project a list of recipes, ingredients, and even a timer you can set for how long you have to prepare the meal. Then, using the power of induction, you can put your pan on the surface and start cooking right away. This table is multi-purpose, for prepping, cooking, and eating on. It saves on counter space and more, which would revolutionize kitchen designs in some big city apartments. Their concept here is mindfulness. Ikea isn’t looking to automate the cooking process, but to change the way we view food and our relationship with it. It sounds pretty deep, right? But working with students from Lund  and Eindhoven Universities, along with London’s IDEO design firm, they created an idea for a kitchen that utilizes every space and keeps us aware of what we have and how to use it. Like in Ikea’s Modern Pantry, they encourage the use of an open shelf system as to keep everything visible to the naked eye. It’s pretty smart too, because how many times have you forgotten about that left over steak in the back of your fridge, only to pull it out six months later and question if you just discovered a new form of life? With your food plainly visible, you know what’s there and hopefully wont go to waste. While the lack of a refrigerator might not work for large families, having induction-cooled storage containers that you can set the temperature for is perfect for those of us who don’t need to keep a feast of food around. They have even figured out a system for waste – relying on recycling. Just sort your different types of recyclables from rubbish, and pop them in the color-coded holes. The trash is compacted, vacuumed-packed and spit out and ready for pick up. They even encourage recycling water. You can tip sink to one side to drain unusable water (like from cleaning supplies or such), or tip it to the “safe” side that will then be filtered for the dishwasher or to even water your personal herb garden, conveniently placed above the sink. If you happen to be in Milan anytime soon, you can see this full-size concept kitchen in action at Salone Del Mobile.
