Kitchen curtains add a decorative touch to the over-the-sink picture windows commonly found in many kitchens. Because they are located in an area where they might possibly be exposed to moisture, heat and flame, kitchen window treatments require special design considerations. Their location places certain restrictions on their fabric, length and bulk, making kitchen curtains less complex to create than the more ornate window treatments used in living areas. You do not need to be a seamstress to sew curtains for your kitchen. Just follow these steps for how to make kitchen curtains.

Curtains, drapes and fabric shades are only a few varieties of seemingly endless window covering options. Consider adding pattern and color, perhaps a fabulous print to liven things up. Choose a neutral, grounding fabric or material if you are after a clean, crisp contemporary or modern feeling. If your kitchen is particularly small, then light, cool colors can make it look larger and brighter; dark, warm colors can make an oversized kitchen feel more balanced and inviting. Geometric patterns or asymmetrical styles can create a stunning visual impact. If privacy is a concern, investigate screening materials that let you see out but allow some daylight to pass while blocking views from the outside; consider café curtains, Roman shades and fabric roller shades using translucent or woven materials, or try sheer fabric, rod-pocket curtain panels.

Hi there,Here is my dilemma. We have 13 ft walls and our windows go up almost as high. Curtains (at least standard) are not made this long and having them custom made I cannot afford. Was wondering if I could buy ready made curtains and buy 2 sets instead of 1 set and somehow do a band (or something?) where the 2 panels would meet, which would then make 1 nice long panel.Does that make sense?Need help! Thanks so much, Mindy

In college, I was desperate for dirt cheap curtains with some kind of design. I ended up buying a crazy cheap white sheet at a local discount store, cutting it in half, finishing off the edges and folding over the top to make a sleeve for the curtain rod, then I made three different sized leaf stencils and “embroidered” around them with yarn that I already had. I used three or four different shades of green to give more dimension and interest to the curtains. Not a bad fix!
