I prefer it, but learned it as grAy, so I’m sticking with that. Here’s the last post about Benjamin Moore Warm Gray Paint Colors in case you missed it.

Choosing colors for a tween boy isn’t always easy — nor is designing a room that will grow with him. Blue is so basic; gray, on the other hand, can add a masculine touch that feels right at any age. “Our challenge for this project was to design a room for a 12-year-old boy that wasn’t too age specific, and was personalized enough for him to feel comfortable in a more ‘grown-up’ space as he transitioned into his teen years,” says designer Laura McCroskey. “We used a soft gray paint (Benjamin Moore HC-95) on three walls and the ceiling of this room to create a neutral and cozy retreat, but painted the accent wall behind his bed with cinnabar for a splash of energy. We also used values of gray from dark charcoal to light gray in his bedding and draperies. The chrome lamps and accessories complemented the grays and added a touch of bling. The room is accessorized with a bookcase for books and his childhood treasures and a wonderful study desk in gray canvas with leather trim.”

Nature’s Gray. Gray in the kitchen is becoming very popular these days. Because kitchens are such a huge gathering place, use a gray that is warm and inviting. If greige looks too taupe to you, turn to nature for inspiration. Many birds and other animals, rocks and pebbles are perfect shades of warm gray. Paint Pick: Gray Horse 2140-50 by Benjamin Moore

Laurel, Thank you for all this information about paint. It’s fantastic and very helpful. I was having trouble finding the right gray for my bedroom, and after a few choices that didn’t work, I decided to look on line for advice. Then I found your blog, followed your advice and got some samples, and finally decided on Gray Owl. Love it. When I was in the store getting the paint samples, a young woman beside me was choosing her colors for painting furniture and asked my opinion. We got chatting and I told her all about my search for the gray I wanted and how I looked on line for it. She said something like, “That’s interesting, my ex-boyfriend’s mother has a blog like that and it’s doing really well.” So it turns out I met your son’s ex-girlfriend in the hardware store while getting my paint samples. Small world! Thank you for the help!ReplyCancel

“My favorite gray paint is actually borrowed from the exterior of William Doyle Galleries, a favorite auction house of mine. It is beautiful feather gray, like the kind you see painted on the massive exterior doors in Paris. I love a super-glossy finish to give the luminosity of a black pearl. The paint is a combination of Benjamin Moore Coventry Gray color and Hollandlac Brilliant finish from Fine Paints of Europe.”

Isn’t gray by definition cool? Well, yes and no. Some grays do have warmer undertones. And some have cooler undertones. However, it’s sooooo easy for gray to go blue and/or icy. So, I’m going to try to avoid anything that will read baby blue and stay away from icy. Just to make it even more confusing, some of these grays do straddle between warmer gray and cooler gray. Don’t worry, I’ll spell it all out.

PAPER WHITE 1590 Paper White is a very soft, verrrrrry pale gray. It is so pale that it might even look white in some lights. I think that it’s a better choice for a darker room. Therefore, it’s a good one for a gray for a north facing room. It is actually neither warm nor cool, just a very pale dove-gray and a wonderful choice for anyone wanting to give a pale gray room a go.

“Gray is a fail-safe color for any room. My go-to is still Dior Gray by Benjamin Moore. It’s classic and elegant and pairs well with pretty much everything: neutrals, blues, white, or black. Go a bit darker with your gray for more drama, especially in smaller spaces like a powder room. I recently used Sherwin-Williams’s Serious Gray. Stunning.”
