David Burke Kitchen, located in the James Hotel, focuses on wholesome and hearty modern American food, locally sourced and presented in the creative and whimsical style of chef David Burke. Guests will enjoy several ways to experience the restaurant including the Treehouse Bar, Wine Cave and outdoor Urban Garden, opening this summer. David Burke Kitchen serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily as well as weekend brunch.

Description David Burke Garden at The James New York is an unparalleled outdoor space with its own bar and seating for 130. The space, along with the hotel’s urban garden, is landscaped with herb beds and flowers by horticulturalist Rebecca Cole and decorated with sculptures made of recycled materials that reflect the rustic, whimsical vibe. Guests can begin a meal at David Burke Garden with snacks and starters such as a tomato, ricotta and eggplant trifle, tuna tartar tacos with whipped avocado and tomato gazpacho with watermelon and rock shrimp. Sandwiches such as the soft-shell crab with salted mango puree, pickled vegetables and Old Bay mayo and the bacon cheddar Kitchen burger with jalapeno fries complement the open-air space, which also features a 14-seat chef’s table and private cabanas. At the bar, sun-brewed iced tea is served in glass jugs, with flavors such as Meyer lemon, hibiscus and ginger-peach. David Burke Garden is open weekdays from noon to 10pm and from 11am-10pm on weekends.

We have eaten at the downstairs restaurant a number of times and while the food tends to the gimmicky, it was often quite tasty. The garden on the other hand was a disappointment. So much so that if this was our first David Burke Kitchen experience, we probably wouldn't be back. Nice to be able to dine outdoors in Manhattan but that is not enough to merit a return visit if the food and service are as substandard as they were on this day. Perhaps it was an off day in the kitchen or the restaurant “weak” menu. Not sure why but I can tell you that it will be some time before I will want to give them another go ,especially given the great options within a 5 minute walk.
